Folio. Two books in one. Stonehenge, A Temple Restor'd to the British Druids. [10], 66, (3) pp. Illustrated with 36 plates which includes frontispiece, 1 double page, 9 are folding and 1 table [together with] Abury [Avebury] A Temple of the British Druids with some others described. Illustrated with 40 plates of which 3 folding (includes the frontispiece), 1 chart, 4 double paged, and 32 full page plates. Title page, (4) pp, [i] vi, 102, vi pp. The author was an excellent field archaeologist, and his surveys of monuments in the 1720s have always remained of high interest. He was an English antiquary and physician who studied the Neolithic Period through the Bronze Age. This work, one of his most monumental works, is a marvelously illustrated book about Stonehenge and Abury(Avebury) which is approximately 25 miles north of Stonehenge. Both places have for centuries been a mystery. Who placed the monuments and why? Stonehenge is believed to have been built long before the pyramids, 1000 plus years or more. Abury (Avebury) is believed to have been built at least 800 years prior to Stonehenge. While this work appears to be the first edition including the original date, it is in fact considered a reprint or facsimile reprint which was attributed to John Reid. There are a few points of this issue noted: This issue shows the shorter "s" as compared to the original which shows the "s" as the usual long (s)"f". The Abury is distinguished by the first line of the imprint ending "B. Dod" rather than "R. Manby" and no mention is made of "Volume the second " and the paper was not hand-made. While the text was reprinted, apparently Reid used the original copper plates for his engravings. The first printing was in a small print run. The demand became overwhelming so it was evident that another printing would meet the demand. A wonderful book detailing the history of both historic places. A handsome copy bound in full calf paneled in gilt with a floral design, each corner displays a gilt crown with scepters, all within a gilt frame, raised bands with each compartment decorated in gilt, title gilt but rubbed, wear to corners, joints and edges, gilt turn-ins and marbled endpapers. Some plates have off-set onto a few text pages but generally clean without foxing, some off-setting to center fold of a few plates and along the edges, early rebacking with old spine laid down, ropes showing through bands, boards appear newer, Armorial bookplate of Baron of Effingham with the motto 'Virtus mille scuta', and the signature of BMH Howard. A very scarce work. [ESTC t146300]. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 023531

An excellent example of Stukeley's major works, rarely found in such uniform contemporary bindings. (338*216, 339*215, 339*214 mm). (ESTC T145546. Allibone 2296. Graesse p515). T146679. Lowndes 2541. Allibone 2296). Stukeley was often, and probably unfairly, considered an eccentric, he was reluctant to practice the circumspection necessary in the study of prehistory, to temper his imagination, or to take the more cautionary advice of friends. However, his unstinted enthusiasm, dedication, and keen eye merited him his position as the father of British field archaeology. ODNB. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 008169
