Also included here is the first London edition, 1890, Sampson Low. Book Condition: Very Good. 8vo. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Vi + 85 pp. + [3] pp. Both in monochrome pictorial wrappers as issued. Allahabad edition, extremities worn and fraying and tears around spine. London edition, some wear to spine edges. Advertisements at beginning and end or text. This collection of short stories was the third to be written by Kipling and the fifth of his works to appear in print. It was published in 1888 in A. H. Wheelers Indian Railway Library series (in which six of Kiplings short story collections appeared in the same year) at Allahabad, where he was writing for The Pioneer newspaper. Both the original Indian edition [1888] and the subsequent London edition [c.1890] are included here. The Indian, A. H. Wheeler of Allahabad edition, is the true first, not the first London edition, a copy of which is offered here as a complimentary comparison to be included in the price. The first edition does not have the Sampson Low publishers or the London address at the bottom of the front cover. The border around A H Wheeler & Co etc is marginally deeper. The publishing credits at the bottom of the title page has only the following, Published by Messrs. A. H. Wheeler & Co Allahabad. It does not have the Sampson Low name and address that later editions carried. First edition - Book Condition: Good+. The spine edges are worn and the spine is fragile though mostly intact with only the extremities worn. The bottom third of the front cover and first page of advertising are beginning to loosen. The rear cover is attached only by a couple of inches with a small, nick loss. There is a small loss to rear bottom corner. The interior is clean throughout and free from previous owners names, marking or annotation and the binding is sound. Overall, a Good + copy of this extremely rare, true first. London edition - The London first edition included in the price, is in Very Good condition with no loss and is also free from names or marking.
