Engraved title-page, followed by pp(18)6/145(1)/369(1) comprising Parts the Third (Varieties of the Human Species, Quadrupeds), Fourth (Birds), Fifth (Reptiles, Fishes, Shells), and Sixth (Insects), plus Principles of Vegetation. With over 130 illustrations (each listed as a 'plate' in plate index) on 102 engraved plates (of 104?). No sign of plate "Ants, North-American" indicated in plate index to be at Part the Third Page 3; no relevant text in introduction nor in main text of Part the Third. Missing plate "Dragon" Part the Fifth Page 164. Plates of human species printed in sepia, all other plates printed in black. Title-page lightly toned, creased, and dust- & handling-marked, with owner's name of some age close to upper edge. Following four leaves - preface leaf, both leaves of plate index and first leaf of list of contents - creased at upper outer corners. Final leaf with a little loss along lower edge confined to margin of page 369; blank verso with dust- & other markings. Remainder of contents with a few closed tears confined to margins, occasional isolated spots and light offsetting, and a number of creased and/or furled corner tips. Edges of text-block toned and a little dust- & handling-marked; top- and lower edges also with minor other markings. Original half calf. Spine with five lightly raised bands, and gilt title and volume number on gilt-bordered maroon leather label and black leather tab respectively. Marbled paper-covered boards. Spine rubbed, with spot of loss in lowest compartment; volume-number tab a little chipped. Hinges lightly rubbed; front with 2cm-long open split from head, rear nicked at head and with spot of loss close to foot. Boards with a little paper loss towards both outer corners of front and towards lower outer corner of rear, and more extensive loss towards upper outer corner of rear; board surfaces otherwise lighty rubbed. Board edges rubbed, along which variable paper loss particularly along fore- & upper edges. Wear at lower outer corner of front board, light wear at other outer corners. Missing original endpapers at both front and rear, as well as any blank preliminary & final leaves and/or half-title; book opening at title-page. Amateurishly-applied white replacement pastedowns; page of religious verse from unknown source pasted down on soiled replacement front pastedown, replacement rear pastedown moderately soiled. Binding holding firmly and of reasonably decent appearance. Contents - missing one plate for certain, possibly two - for the most part clean, tight and fresh. GOOD copy.
