Volumes XXXIX and XL of The Sacred Books of the East, these 2 volumes are their own subset The Sacred Books of China: The Texts of Taoism and include James Legge's full translations of The Texts of Taoism. Volume 39 includes the full text of the Tao Teh King and the first 27 books of The Writings of Kwang-Tze. Volume 40 includes the final 6 books of the Writings of Kwang-Tze and the Thai-Shang Tractate of Actions and Their Retributions. Together these texts make up the most important Taoist works. Both volumes are first editions/first printings. Both volumes were part of the Pennsylvania Museum Library and have that lable on the front pastedown. Both volumes also have a small label from the original London bookseller on the front pastedown. Spines slightly slanted, more slanted on Vol XL. Both volumes have some soiling to rear pastedown. These books belonged to a University of Texas professor and professional rare book appraiser who appraised rare book collections for some of the most important rare book libraries in America. He frequently preferred to be paid in rare books instead of cash and he had a special interest in Taoism, these books have his occasional pencil marks in them and he obviously read them.
