Beschreibung
The first edition of this report from the Ministry of Public works, Egypt, regarding water flow irrigation channels in the Sadd el Kafara region of Egypt. A scarce work, from the early 20th century. Signed by the author to the recto of front endpaper, 'F Newhouse with the Authors Compliments, A D Butcher'. Prior owner F Newhouse's inscription to the front pastedown and his neat notes throughout to the margins. From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan. Illustrated, with twenty two plates, being graphs and diagrams to support A D Butcher's findings including a folding map of the Bahr el Gebel system. This work discusses the general hydraulics of the Sadd region as well as a detailed investigation into the part of the Sadd through which the Bahr el Gebel and its many subsidiary channels flow. The enquiry which lead to this work had been a result of years of work to eventually allow for a systematic and orderly flow from Mongalla to Lake No. The oldest known dam of real significance is the Sadd-el-Kafara dam in Egypt. It was constructed around 2600BC. To this work, Butcher outlines the history of hydraulics in the region and the work that he and Drs H E Hurst, P Phillips and E S Waller, among many others, have undertaken. This title was published as a part of a series of reports commissioned by the 'Ministry of Public Works, Egypt'. The Egyptian Department of Public works was established in the early 19th century and concentrated on works relating to irrigation and hydraulic engineering. It became the most respected engineering entity and regarded as a fantastic school for civil engineers in modern Egypt. This work was issued during the British Occupation Period. In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd marks to boards. Author's signature to the recto of front endpaper and prior owner's inscription to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Prior owner's notations throughout, mostly to the margins. Pages are clean. Very Good Indeed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 621L1
