Reprint of the well regarded 1956 edition. Book is in Near Fine condition with dark green boards, blind stamped on the front with the title and bright gilt titling on the spine. DJ is also Near Fine with only blemish being the clipped front lower corner. 45 accurate folding plans and 123 photographs of sailing ships. This is an exhaustive history of the sailing vessels employed as training ships during all or part of their careers. The author describes in detail each vessel in turn and follows its career with the emphasis being on merchant ships or ex-naval vessels engaged in training cadets for the Merchant Service. Underhill covers some 200 vessels and divides his work into eight chapters. (1) Training in Sail. (2) Full-Riggers. (3) Four and Five-Masted Barques. (4) Barques. (5) Barquentines. (6) Brigs and Brigantines. (7) Schooners. (8) Ketches and Small Craft. In addition there are two appendices providing a table of training vessels in chronological order.
