The great French realist Gustave Flaubert's first published this historical (and considered salacious) novel in 1862; English versions were simultaneously published by Vizetelley and Saxon, with different translators (this Saxon version is less common). This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition, "Englished" by M. French Sheldon. ("New York" is listed as well as London for the publisher's location; Quercus believes this an indication of the First American Edition.) Bright blue cloth binding, beveled, with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Clean text; xxiii, 421 pages. One publisher advert in the rear (unopened), for Welcome's "Alamo." The spine has darkened, but the gilt remains bright. Very light rubbing at the margins. A superior copy. Size: 12mo - over 6�" - 7�" tall. Bestandsnummer des Verk�ufers 003058
