Beschreibung
1803. First edition. [v], 184pp. John Leyden (1775-1811) was a Scottish poet and orientalist. He also wrote a book on European settlements in Africa and helped Sir Walter Scott to gather materials for his 'Border Minstrelsy'. His ballads have taken a higher place than his longer poems, of which 'Scenes of Infancy' is probably the best known. This wide-ranging poem invokes Scotland's natural and martial history in the context of moderization and imperialism. It also contains two specifically Arthurian sections: the first introduces Taliessen's prophecy and Arthur's return as a savior; and the second links Thomas the Rhymer's capture by the fairy queen and the knights' sleep under Eildon, then again invokes the prophecy of Arthur's return. The book is bound in contemporary ort slightly later red half leather over purple cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards togehter with noticeable fading to the cloth on the front board and lighter fading to the cloth on the rear board. There is wear with a little loss to the leather on the corner tips and the spine is scuffed. About 1/8" of the leather is missing from the bottom of the spine and there is damage and loss of up to about 1 1/4" at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and some scattered foxing. The foxing is light although the first few pages, including the title-page are a bit more heavily affected. A name has been written on the top corner of the half-title page. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers gScotPoetLey01
