Beschreibung
[nice solid book, just a trace of dust-soiling to the top edge, old bookseller's rubber-stamp on ffep (Ye Olde Book Shoppe, Long Beach, California); jacket lightly rubbed, shows some wear at spine ends, tiny chip at top right corner of front panel, another tiny chip at top corner of rear panel]. "A novel in which the lady is brought up to date" -- because admit it, you've often found yourself wondering "what ever happened to old Scheherazade, anyway?" The basic conceit of the book is that Ms. S. enlists the aid of a jinni (genie) to "enter our era, with all its dangers and doubtful delights, seeking always for knowledge, usefulness, and a partner to play upon her mind and body as upon an organ, fusing the two in crashing chords of ecstasy." This leads, as such things will, to "fast-moving conversation, well-spiced with fun, [which] probes such diversities as the stock market, drinking and smoking, the gold standard, art forgeries, unemployment, desegregation, and nudity," all rendered in "allustive, illusive, alliterative prose [which] is polished to glow like poesy," whatever the hell that means. (And with crashing chords of ecstasy, don't forget.) Not a book you'll run across every day of the week, not that you'd necessarily want to. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 22818
