Beschreibung
(price-clipped) [a bit of shelfwear to bottom edge, slight exposure of board at bottom corner of rear cover, no other significant wear; jacket has some surface-chipping at spine extremities, a few short diagonal scrape marks on front panel]. An "explosively satiric novel" set during the Allied Occupation of Japan following World War II -- "the story of a day and a night -- what a night! -- in the lives of people who made the Occupation what it was." The Ohio-born author first came to Japan in 1946, worked as a film reviewer and feature writer for a few years, returned to the States to complete his studies at Columbia University, then returned to Tokyo in 1953. He divided his residency between Tokyo and New York for most of his remaining lifetime (he died in 2013). Best known for his film scholarship (including several definitive works on the Japanese cinema) and essays, he served for three years (1969-1972) as Curator of Film at the Museum of Modern Art. Among his published works were analyses of the work of Yasujiro Ozu and Akira Kurosawa, and he also wrote the English subtitles for a number of Kurosawa's films. The present book, later reprinted in paperback under the title "Where Are the Victors?", was, I believe, his only foray into fiction (also unusual from this publishing house). The jacket blurb description -- "a controversial, sometimes infuriating, often hilarious, and always stimulating novel" -- puts in squarely in the vein of Joseph Heller's "Catch-22.".
