Originally completed in 1933, publication was delayed due to censorship issues until Asturias financed the first edition while in Mexico in 1946. Critical acclaim followed, though publication in the United States stalled until 1964, likely due to suppression efforts from the CIA-funded Congress for Cultural Freedom.
