Beautifully bound in full morocco with gilt detailing, this is a charmingly illustrated edition of James Thomson's two most popular works of poetry. The first edition thus.A lovely edition of the two best known works from Scottish poet James Thomson, 'The Seasons' and 'The Castle of Indolence'.Illustrated throughout with the charming vignette engravings and head and tail pieces of Samuel Williams, and with a biography of Thomson from Allan Cunningham.'The Seasons', a lengthy blank verse poem reflecting on the landscape of the countryside, was highly influential and much liked for at least a century after its writing, and first published between 1726 and 1730.'The Castle of Indolence', first published in 1748, is written in the form of the Spenserian stanza, and is considered to have been influential upon the later Romantic poets Lord Byron, William Wordsworth, and John Keats. In a full morocco binding, with gilt detailing. Light rubbing to joints and back strip head and tail, resulting in small losses to the leather. Otherwise, externally, lovely.
