[www.abebooks dot com only allows book descriptions of a certain length, so fire away with additional questions.] Nearly three centuries-old "reader," a suite of memoires, histories, summaries, in French language throughout, of then current understandings in astronomy, mathematics, cosmology and kindred fields in the physical and natural historical sciences. Published by Pierre Mortier of Amsterdam for l'Academie Royale des Sciences, in seeming First Edition Thus, meaning a cobbling together of disparately published items into one cohesive whole. Sympathetic full calf leather and with seemingly newer marbled endpapers front and rear (because they look so good), some half-toning to especially endpapers, heavy toning and some mild foxing throughout, five raised bands to spine, gilt title and fleurs-de-lis in compartments, "Histoire de l'Academie" stamped over leather in one, quite finely. All three edges stained in red. Plentiful figures hors-text, and engraved black-and-white plates throughout, over two dozen of them, including folding, none ripped, torn or soiled, quite unusually so. Some but not much rubbing to most extremities. Gilt titling still crisp and sharp. Red and black type title-page, fine publisher's device and final tail, too. Original linen silk ribbon bookmark still affixed and functioning. Hinges solid, ditto, joints, but for beginning split to front upper for less than an inch. Contains essays on all manner of topics and disciplines, fields and properties, including "Recherches sur la Communication de L'Electricite," by le Monnier, "Des Deux Conjonctions de Mars avec Saturne, . . . ," by Cassini, "Motens: D'Empecher l'evaporation des liqeuers, . . . ," by de Reaumur (Rene Antoine Ferchault de Reaumur [1683-1757], French entomologist), plus an additional Addition, and then an Explication des Figures, then "D'Aberrationde la Lumiere des planetes, by Clairaut, "Suite de la Relation Abregee Donner en 1744," by Bougeur, "Sur L'Etalon de L'Aune, by Hellot and Camus, "Premiere Partie, Mesure Geometrique, de la Longueur de L'Arc du Meridien," by Collectif, "Sur le Mouvement de Saturne," by Monnier, "Observations Metereologiques Faites a L'Observatoire Royale," by de Fouchy, "Messieures de la Societe," including by Abbe de Sauvages. Then follows a Catalogues Quorundam Librorum Latinorum by Pierre Mortier, Amsterdam. All in, quite scarce.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
