First UK Edition. INSCRIBED BY THE TRANSLATOR (DAPHNE WOODWARD). Publisher's blue boards with gilt spine lettering. A VG+ copy in a fine publisher's price-clipped and re-priced D/W. Inscribed by the translator: "To G. and L., /who didn't know./ The most revolting so far/ and I hope, the last./ D.W./ November 1955". Despite these sentiments Woodward was to translate several more Simenon novels. She had previously been secretary to Arthur Koestler which may have given her a taste for pschological travail.
