Ix, 253 pp. Octavo. Black cloth with white title. Copyright 1937 but this is the later "War Edition" so printed after Dec 1941. Black cloth covers are worn at extremities, spine tips rubbed, some pale "splash" marks on front cover and spine. Title a bit faded, front board a little forward. Interior clean and unmarked, bit toned. A good copy of this lovely book. Fisher describes feasts from many tables and many times, some her own. In typical fashion, she describes a French man who has captured and is cleaning his own snails, leaving them to starve in an aquarium until they are ready to eat: "For a day or two more they stayed, bottoms up, on the glass. Then they began to drop off. Nights were punctuated by the thumps of snails fainting in their little Black Hole. We lost sleep, feeling very sick for them.The last scene I caught through the dining room door: Plume and Doudouce bent gravely over a lighted table, pouring the hot sauce into each up-ended snail shell.
