This is a scarce book for anyone interested in the history of shoemaking and in particular the part it has played in the economic and social history of Scotland. It contains an annotated account of the history of the Shoemaker Incorporation of Perth, with the information largely taken from the minute books, and covers a period of nearly 400 years. There is information on the means of learning the trade; the place of abode of apprentices; the fees, and practical essay, or test, shoes before a person could become an accepted freeman; the passing away of craft and trading privileges; the hereditary principle introduced; and financial hlep to decayed brethren, eleemosiners, etc. The book also contains a few 'special pages' which are printed on a brown coloured paper and contain ,for example, a copy of the title page from the minutes of the Corporation from 1793. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The spine ends are lightly bumped and the spine is slightly faded. There is also some fading down the spine edge of the front board. The contents are tight and clean and there is an interesting inscription on the front free endpaper that reads: "Jas. Robertson - Clerk to the Shoemaker Incorporation of Perth - 18 Mar. 1927".
