First edition. Hardcover in olive green cloth ornately decorated in white, dark green and gilt and lettered in white. Color frontispiece "Her eye caught mine and she ceased to dance.358 pp. A lovely fine, tight, bright copy, all gilt bright, trace of rubbing to some of the white stamping but withal the nicest example we've encountered either in person or in pictured. A melodramatic novel narrated in the form of correspondence among several people in London, Paris and Ireland, but mainly between Henry Gastonard, a young aspiring sculptor, and his Irish best friend Paddy o'Connell. Gastonard comes across (and falls in love with) an innocnet, beautiful young woman whom he finds working below her station as an assitant ot a lion tamer in a carnival. He devotes himself to rescuing her from the cheap travelling shows. From the New York Times review in 1909: "The manner in which the story is told is fresh and entertaining, while its varied array of incidents is well spiced with mystery, danger, and desperate wickedness.".
