With telling detail, the book depicts the dissensions and the weaknesses of leadership that resulted in the Socialist Revolutionary movement's losing out to its rivals, even though it was the largest political group among those raised to power by the February Revolution of 1917. The author's analysis goes far to explain the paradox of the seizure and retention of power in a primarily peasant, rural land by the Bolsheviks - a proletarian, urban party. The narrative moves with vigor and is enriched by colorful descriptions of its crucial episodes and trenchant sketches of the personalities of the leading actors in them. By approaching a major historical event through a detailed study of the record of the movement that failed to dominate it, Professor Radkey sets the event in a new and striking perspective. More than twenty years of intensive research and reflection have gone into the preparation of Professor Radkey's work, for which he has drawn fully on the extant primary materials and on direct conversations with leaders of the Socialist Revolutionary movement. Together the two volumes, of which the earlier won the first Borden Award of the Hoover Institute at Stanford, constitute a major contribution to the understanding of modern Russian history.
