A first edition map box containing numerous fascinating maps and plans from the Siege of Sevastopol. The first edition. The original cloth map box, containing sixteen folding maps and plans from the Siege of Sevastopol. This work was intended to accompany the, 'Journal of the Siege of Sebastopol'. Each map is mounted on paper-covered, folding boards. Printed at the Topographical Department for the British War Office, under the direction of Captain Elphinstone. The Siege of Sevastopol, (which was called 'Sebastopol' at the time), occurred during the Crimean War in 1854 until 1855. The siege was undertaken by the allied forces, which then comprised of France, Sardinia, the Ottoman Empire and Great Britain, and was intended as a victorious march to Sevastopol, the capital of Crimea.
