Octavo. 226p. [14]pp. ads at rear. One of the most influential books of its day on the issue of science and religion. Some had taken the Origin of Species published in 1859 as an indication there was not validity to the Christian creation story. Bixby notes three important aspects of religious philosophy; (1) belief in man having a soul; (2) belief in a [Supreme] Being over all the universe; and (3) Belief that the soul of man and this Beings work are interwoven. To show this he takes the scientific method and shows how both science and religion are dependent upon hypotheses. While the issues continue today, his analysis as scientist and a man of faith are still useful today since he has stated his observations with clarity and the caution that a strict believer in the ultimate aspects of either science or religion would not find attractive.
