Beschreibung
This curious publication, privately printed for the author in Portland, Oregon, is nevertheless an important record of one man's personal account of his experiences as an army combat engineer in the Pacific Theater of WW2. I guess "escapades" would be a more fitting term, since his account is packed with humor, and although he doesn't flinch from the harshness and lunacy of army life, he does it with such a lighthearted tone that you can't help but giggle. Mr Gilroy had previously published a hard-to-find little volume of war poetry called "By the Numbers", some of the contents of which are incorporated into this book. Illustrated with little cartoon drawings with captions like " For recreation we slapped mosquitoes". There's even a glossary of "armyisms" at the rear. This large, softcover book with its brown textured card wrappers, lettered in silver on the upper cover, is in pretty good shape. There is some bumping to top of spine, a name on the top of the front endpaper (which is actually the title page, or half-title, it's hard to determine!), and some offset browning to that same leaf. There's a minor slant to the book and slight browning to edges, but a very good copy, tight and clean, and it has its original dust jacket - a very scarce thing. The jacket is browned and quite spotted on the illustrated front panel, edges are worn with some shallow nicks and chips, and the front flap had a tenuous attachment to the front panel before being strengthened with archival tape. However, the jacket is complete and present! A really interesting - and entertaining - addition to the list of military books giving personal accounts of the war. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 001157

Personally, I don't like my books to look and feel like a library book, so I don't use those adjustable jacket protectors like Brodart, Gaylord, etc. Where appropriate, books are supplied with their jackets protected by a thin, clear, archival quality acetate film which is loosely fitted with no tape or adhesive but which provides protection without de...
