A scarce first edition of this survey for Somerset County Council by Thompson, a member of the Town Planning institute. With a photographic frontispiece, 34 plates, 16 maps and 2 planning proposals; collated, complete. Including chapters on archeology and history; existing communications; administration and population; agriculture and industries; public services; landscape; design and appearance of buildings; and a summary of recommendations. The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) is the principal body representing planning professionals in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It promotes and develops policy affecting planning and the built environment. Founded in 1914, the institute was granted a Royal Charter in 1959. In a green armorial cloth binding, with gilt detailing to the front board and spine. Externally, a little worn with some marks to boards, a little rubbing, and bumping and slight loss to the extremities. The joints are tender; the front hinge has been reinforced with plastic tape, which has caused offsetting. Internally, the binding is tender. The pages are generally bright and clean, with scattered spotting and a few marks, and light foxing to the second front endpaper; with two personal ink copperplate inscriptions to the front free endpaper. 11 maps and one planning proposal have been detached from the end of the book and are stored in the rear pocket, designed for that purpose.
