Beschreibung
64 pages; gray paper wrapper (5 1/2 x 9 1/4 inch). Annotated by the Rev. David Fosdick, Jr., circa 1853. Theodore Parker (1810-1860) was a Unitarian theologian and clergyman as well as a social reformer. He emphasized a rational approach to religion that was considered radical for its time. Parker came out with his thinking in a sermon preached at an ordination in South Boston in 1841. The sermon: "The Transient and Permanent in Christianity" set off a firestorm of criticism among the traditional clergy, who considered it anti-Christian. This pamphlet, published nine days after the sermon, is a compilation of the criticism. From the printed publisher's note facing the first page of text: "The following pages contain the report of Mr. Parker's sermon by Messrs. Fairchild, Driver and Dunham, together with the remarks upon that report and sermon in the Boston Courier and other papers." Fosdick (1813-1892) was a Boston clergyman and German scholar. He made his annotations, in pencil, to the pamphlet (38 pages are annotated) in 1853 (signature on the front cover). They are pro-Parker and contain many insider religious. social and political comments. Very good clean copy with Fosdick's annotations. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 12975
