First Edition. Biography of Claude Williams, a Presbyterian minister active in civil rights, labor advocacy, and race relations, written by an English author, socialist, and KGB agent. Belfrage joined the Communist Party briefly in 1937, but withdrew after a few months. He was a cofounder and writer for the "National Guardian," a radical leftish independent weekly newspaper. Belfrage was questioned by the FBI in 1947, summoned to appear before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1953, and deported in 1955. He continued to write until his death in 1990. Very Good to Near Fine with modest foxing to cloth and yellowing and mild spotting to endpapers, in a Very Good plus dustjacket with spine ends worn, light edge and surface wear, and few instances of soiling and foxing to white of flaps and rear panel.
