252 Pages. Green covers. Ace Science Fiction Classic F-372. Interior text pages have just a light shade of the age-tanning normally expected in a 60 year old book with pulp paper that was properly stored. When the Inter-Planetary Corporation's crack spaceliner Arcturus took off on a routine flight to Mars, it turned out to be the beginning of a most unexpected trip to the unexplored moons of distant Jupiter. For once wrecked on Ganymede, the survivors had first to master that world's primeval terrors, then reconstruct a new spacecraft, and finally find a way out of the problems presented by the warring intelligences of the Jovian system. Spacehounds of IPC is justly considered to be one of Edward E. Smith's finest novels - a classic of exciting space adventure that is not part of any series. As the huge spaceship Arcturus accelerated for Mars, suddenly it was attacked by unknown beings from the depths of space. When Stevens switched on the view-plate, he saw: The entire nose of the gigantic craft had been sheared off in two immense slices as though clipped off by a gigantic sword, and the severed slices were drifting slowly away. Stevens made out a relatively tiny ball of metal at a distance of perhaps a mile from the vessel; from this ball there shot a blinding plane of light, and the Arcturus fell apart at the midsection. Then the attacker began slicing the lower half into thin, disk-shaped sections, its incandescent plane of destruction accompanied by a pyrotechnic display of severed and short-circuited high-tension leads.
