Derby & Jackson, 1856; no additional printings indicated; xii, [13]-328, [8 ads]. First state, with eight pages of ads beginning with "The Hidden Path" (BAL 3998). Green blind-stamped cloth binding, with decorated gilt titling on spine; illustrated frontis and title page. Front fly-leaf appears to have been removed. Binding remains firm and fully intact; previous owner inscriptions on blank front end page and frontis verso, a few smudges in outer margins, else interior is clean and free of markings; moderate amount of wear to edges of boards, gilt titling dulled and lightly rubbed but otherwise clearly legible.
