Contains lyrics for a number of American songs that were presumably popular in the early 19th century prior to the Civil War. Including "The Battle of Plattsburgh, " "Burning of the Steamer Lexington, " "Banks of the Schulykill, " "The American Star", etc. This is a small, pocket-sized book in original blindstamped cloth covers with gilt spine lettering. This songster does not contain music, only the lyrics. Pages generally clean and bright. This is an uncommon early American songster. Probably published in about 1856 according to Sabin. (the Steamer Lexington burned in 1840). No author or date is given, only the publisher. This is apparently a variant of the copy Sabin examined, as it only contains the Star Song Book, not the "Everlasting Oracle of Fate" bound with the Song Book and mentioned in his description. Old owner verse in pencil on rear end paper ("Julia Witney is my name." ) Pages are clean and unfoxed. Ref: Sabin 90496; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 189 pages. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 1716
