First edition, the first issue (with Hotten imprint). 202pp. Original cloth, slightly marked and handled, lettered in gold at the spine. Title-hinge tender. Illustrated with five coloured plates featuring drawings by the author. Former owner bookplate to the front pastedown alongside a short relevant extract from an old dealer catalogue. A good, sound copy. No dust wrapper, as issued. "The matter for this publication was obtained by Hotten directly or indirectly from the 'Corsair', published in America in 1839. Not realising that it was copyright in England, he prepared the book , when he learned that a large part of it had been published in 'The Paris Sketch Book' in 1840. Hotten died in 1873, when the book was still unpublished. Chatto was an assistant of his, and he and Windus purchased the publishing business and stock. It is believed that they, finding the work was covered by copyright, sold all the stock, bound and unbound, to an American dealer - the bound copies bearing Hotten's name on the title and cloth covers.
