A fascinating and very scarce publication from the Sudan Government detailing the contract signed on the 17th October 1922 between Sir Edgar Edwin Bernard, Financial Secretary of the Sudan Government, and the contractors - S. Peason and Sons - employed to construct a dam on the Blue Nile.The Sennar Dam is an irrigation dam on the Blue Nile designed by Scottish engineer Sir Murdoch MacDonald, and completed in 1925. This contract contains information on 'specification, schedule of prices, and other schedules and bond', along with a discussion of methods for the settlement of disputes, canalization, valuation of materials, sanitary and health services, and materials.This dam was a key aspect of the Gezira Scheme, one of the world's largest irrigation projects, started by the British while the area was governed as a part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. It involves water from the Blue Nile being distributed through canals and ditches to tenant farms lying between the Blue and White Nile rivers, for the purposes of growing cotton.From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan, and with his contemporary inscription to the head of the front wraps, dated 1923.
