A profusely illustrated work featuring fifty-two tipped-in plates by the illustrator Max Beerbohm. First thus. First U.S. edition published in the same year at the first English edition. Illustrated with 51 tipped-in plates. Collated complete. Each plate is accompanied by titled tissue guard. This work showcases the caricatures of Max Beerbohm, who was known for his signature comic drawing style. Among the political and literary figures depicted in this volume names include: Joseph Conrad; Bernard Shaw; Margot Asquith; Lytton Strachey. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards and held in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally smart, with minor shelfwear. The front and rear hinges are lightly strained. The dustwrapper is worn, with a large tear to the rear joint to the head, resulting in an additional tear to the rear of the wrap. Lightly bumped to the extremities, the dustwrapper also has light rubbing and handling marks to the rear. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with bright plates throughout.
