The Sussex Archaeological Society, founded in 1846, is one of the oldest county-based archaeological societies in the UK. A registered self-funding charity whose charitable aims are to enable people to enjoy, learn about and have access to the heritage of Sussex. Volume X was published in 1858 following the General Annual Meeting of the Sussex Archaeological Society, held at Arundel in 1857 and presided over by the Duke of Norfolk. This work contains a report of payments to the society, a list of the members, and a report of various archaeological concerns of the area. This volume contains 12 plates, one of them folding. There is also a 'Bone and Son' binding plate on the rear pastedown. Volume XVIII contains the bookplate of a previous owner on the front pastedown: 'Alfred Burton'. The volume was published in 1866, and gives a general report for the year 1865, including an account of receipts and payments, a list of members, and a report on the collections. This volume contains 6 plates, one of which is folding. Volume XXII was published in 1870 and contains a frontispiece of W.H. Blaauw, Esq., a valuable member of the Sussex Archaeological Society who had died this year. The report contains the usual list of members and financial report, as well as 11 plates, of them folding and in colour. Volume XLVI was published in 1903 begins with a list of officers and rules for the Sussex Archaeological Society. A folding plate listing the 'Statement of Assets and Liabilities' is to the recto of page xvi. The work also contains 67 plates, many of them photography and some of them folding. Bound in decorative cloth. Externally, smart with shelf wear and bumping to heads and tails of spines on all volumes. Externally, volume X has marks and fading to the front and back boards and bumping to extremities. Externally, volumes XVIII and XXII have some wear to extremities and spine. Volume XVIII has a tear to the rear joint, though it still remains firm, and both volume XVIII and XXII have chipping to the top of the spine. Externally, volume XLVI is smart with slight fading to the spine and minor shelf wear. Volume X has a binder's plate on the rear pastedown. Volume XVIII has the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, rear hinge to volume X tender, but remaining firm. Internally, bindings are tender, especially to volume X. Internally, volume X has some spotting throughout, and volume XXII contains a stain to the front free-endpapers. Otherwise, pages contain the odd spot but are clean. Good.
