TORCH SINGER is the story of a breathless love triangle between blonde ex-chorus girl and titular torch singer Millicent, her impotent and drug-abusing wretch of a secret husband Clem, and pure-minded Midwestern musician Brian, a sap from the sticks who cries into his cocktails and dreams of warming her heart with his "hot song." Includes a multi-page ode to the diagonal draping of the '30s bias-cut gown, expertly represented by the unknown jacket artist. Grant/Lengel wrote a number of short stories and novels under various pseudonyms, including (as "Warren Spencer") MAD MELODY. Under his own name, Lengel began his long literary career as Theodore Dreiser's assistant and held senior positions at the Hearst Corporation, the Treasury's War Finance Division, and as editor for Fawcett's innovative Gold Medal line of postwar paperback originals. 7.25'' x 5''.
