Beschreibung
324 pages. Bentley is called the father of the modern detective story, greatly admired by Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. He collaborated in this book with Allen, another early British adventure writer, who was the creator of William Clerihew, a wine detective, who makes a cameo appearance in this book. Philip Trent, portrait painter and amateur sleuth, must solve a difficult murder case to exonerate himself as a suspect. The book spine is slightly lightened, and many pages throughout have a vertical toning pattern (unique in my experience, clearly not an offset but the effect of the manufacturing of the papper used to print the book. I have seen other Ist American editions with this toned paper. I am quoting from an ABE entry on this book for an example. The cataloger writes: " First American edition. Several page signatures with excessive tanning (apparently vvvacidic paper content). Covers bright orange with black lettering, sign of ownership label on front end paper. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000703
