Paris, crown octavo, two volumes: [iv], xvi, 300 p.; [iv], p. 301-524, 8, [4] p.; 2 folding plates and 2 folding maps. Half-titles and errata pages present. ***CONTENT: Count Constantin François Volney (1757-1820), the noted French historian, philosopher, traveller and writer, came to America in 1795, visiting most of the then known United States. In this celebrated treatise, the author provides some of the earliest descriptions of the climate and physical geography of the United States and Canada, including his observations on soils, geology, Native Americans, diseases, etc. According to Merrill, Volney's views on winds, currents, physiographical and geological subjects "were by far the best that had thus far appeared", and he devotes six pages to a discussion of this work. This copy is the variant issue (no priority) that has the separately paginated 'Vocabulaire de la langue des Miamis' at the rear of volume two. The large map, unfolding to 25 by 19.75 inches, shows Appalachian physiography, watershed details, tribal lands, etc. from southern Canada (including the Great Lakes) to the Gulf of Mexico. The smaller map (15.5 by 10.5 inches) of North and Central America illustrates prevailing winds and currents; Baja California is correctly shown as a peninsula. A folding plate shows views of Niagara Falls and the St. Lawrence River. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, near Fine copy in recent half calf and marbled boards, with gilt-lettered, red morocco title labels on the backstrips. The covers are like new, save for mild sunning to the backstrips. Recent endpapers. The text pages and plates are pristine: fresh, crisp, clean and bright; joints and hinges solid, bindings very firm. No evidence of previous ownership. This is a handsome set of a scarce and important treatise. Merrill, 1924, p. 24-30. Sabin 100692. Ward and Carozzi 2256. Not in BMNH.
