Beschreibung
[a bit shelfworn on bottom edge, base of spine bumped, light wear to corners, old bookseller's rubber stamp on front pastedown (Bertrand Smith Acres of Books, Long Beach, California); jacket shows a little wear at edges and corners, tiny paper loss at top front hinge]. A tongue-in-cheek "historical" novel that takes place "when Louis XIV was still King of France and the King's Eye in Versailles kept a close watch on the merchants of St. Malo, hoping he could pin something on them and shake them down for a contribution to the Royal Treasury." The hero of the tale is Jules Cotrel, "a St. Malo merchant [who] got himself called the Terror of Peru," whose undoing was a green-eyed, red-haired Spanish spitfire named Manuela Mercedita Fernanda de Ramos y O'Falon, for whom he falls head over heels and pursues all the way to, well, Peru. "Mr. Minnigerode tells his story at once gayly and sympathetically," wrote the critic for The New York Times, "for no matter how heartily you may laugh at that young fool Jules, you simply cannot help liking him.".
