Two very smart scarce volumes, richly illustrated with many engravings and, uniquely, with 15 extra engravings and 3 rare early photos tipped in. Both vols 8vo 8.5" x 5.75", half calf over marbled boards. 5 raised spine bands, green labels and rich gilt-embossed decorations. All edges are marbled. Vol 1: illustrated half title - steel engraving by Thos Gilks, title page, preface dated August 19th 1840, contents : 15 chapters. Each chapter is headed with a small engraving around the first letter. Condition: generally near fine and very clean indeed with virtually no foxing or marks to the pages. The bindings are tight, some rubbing to extremities, esp. corner tips and light scuffing inplaces.
