Melek Hanum offers insights into the political machinations of the late Ottoman empire in this autobiography A first edition of this interesting autobiography by Melek Hanum describing her life amongst the political elite during the decline of the Ottoman empire in the mid 19th century. Hanum was the wife of Kibrisli Mehmed Emin Pasha, an Ottoman civil servant who served as Grand Vizier (the de facto prime minister) three different times under the reign of Sultan Abdulmejid in the mid 19th century. As a result of the mobility afforded women in official households, Hanum was proximal to the political intrigue and corruption that characterised the late Ottoman empire. Alongside observations of the political machinations amongst the Ottoman elite, the reader is also privy to Hanum's personal struggles, involving murder and divorce.
