Octavo. 48pp. Original three quarter leather over marbled boards with gilt lettering on black label of spine; raised bands. Channing was one of the prominent Unitarianism preacher in the early 18th Century America. Though not an Abolitionist he wrote and published a book entitle "Slavery" in 1835. This letter to the Honourable Henry Clay was also published by James Munroe and Company, Boston, in the same year. Channing believed that the annexation of Texas would prolong the racial struggle in America. However, he was deemed to be a romantic racist, a term for critiques of slavery who do little to change the dominant American mainstream culture. Norman Mailer and Jack Kerouac were accused to be romantic racist by feminist scholars in the fifties. Later in life Channing embraced so-call immediate abolitionism based on the British success in the West- Indies. Light wear along edges of binding with some scuffing along joints of spine. and small abrasion on back cover. Number inked to inside front cover. Some age toning of block and chips along foredge.
