Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers
In Arabic, Hindustani, and Latin. 1738-1739, In Typographia Instituti Judaici (Halle, Germany), three separate small octavo volumes (4 x 6 5/8 inches). Text in Arabic and Hindustani (Urdu script). Uniformly housed in their matching original 18th-century German block-printed floral temporary paper wrappers. Minor uniform browning and light, expected edge wear to the fragile paper spines. Internal text blocks remain tight and secure, with original stitching slightly exposed at the deep gutters as is typical for works preserved in fragile temporary wrappers. Margins are entirely untrimmed and raw as issued. Neat contemporary German pencil notations to the title page of Liber Quartus ('51 Bll. kpl.') and the inner front wrapper of the Hindustani volume (bearing shelf marks, a leaf/page count of '1 Bl., 110 SS.', and an erroneous 'Thomas à Kempis 1739' tag matching the hand on the other volumes, confirming they were grouped together by the same early collector). Vol. I contains 'De Christo Imitando Liber Primus' (1739) featuring the Latin title page, 'Lectori Christiano' preface, and full Arabic text block; complete with 57 leaves (114 pages), with some noticeable historic water staining along the gutter and lower margins of the title page, alongside four tiny, localized historic pinholes to the left of the central text block, staying entirely clear of the typography. Vol. II contains 'De Christo Imitando Liber Quartus' (1739) with its respective Latin title page and Arabic text block detailing Chapters 11 through 14; leaf count conforms to contemporary German trade notation at 51 leaves (102 pages). Vol. III contains the rare 1738 Hindustani translation of the Biblical Psalter (Psalms 1 to 41) complete with its woodcut calligraphic title page reading 'D?'?d k? Pahil?-k? Kit?b' (Of David, Book One) alongside headers denoting 'Royal Prophets' and 'Manifestation.' The text features decorative typographic headpieces and running headers ('Mazm?r' / Psalm), running to 110 pages. A remarkably well-preserved, institutional-grade trio of ephemeral European mission printings. ~KMP~ [2.0P] This unique collection represents the innovative linguistic and missionary output of Johann Heinrich Callenberg's (1694-1760) celebrated 'Institutum Judaicum et Muhammedicum' press in Halle, Germany. The two Arabic volumes utilize the elegant 1663 translation of 'The Imitation of Christ' originally executed in Rome by the Discalced Carmelite friar Father Coelestinus a S. Liduina (Peter Golius). In the printed Latin preface ('Lectori Christiano') to Vol. I, Callenberg explicitly acknowledges his theological censorship of this Roman Catholic translation, writing that he altered nothing 'except that I have removed a few words regarding the worship of saints, purgatory fire, and other errors of this kind' ('.nihil mutaui, nisi quod pauca verba, spectantia ad sanctorum cultum, ignem purgatorium, aliosque hujus generis errores, sustulerim.'). This deliberate editorial strategy made the classic spiritual text fully compatible with Protestant Pietist global evangelism. These Arabic fascicles are comprehensively cataloged in Christian Friedrich Schnurrer's foundational 'Bibliotheca Arabica' (1811) under items 234-236. The third volume is a highly significant monument of South Asian linguistics: the Book of Psalms (Psalms 1 to 41) translated into the Dakkhini/Urdu dialect of Hindustani using the Perso-Arabic script by the pioneer Danish-Halle missionary Benjamin Schultze (1689-1760). Printed in 1738 using Callenberg's custom-cut, early block-like non-cursive typographic Naskh font, this pamphlet stands as one of the earliest European typographic printings of the Urdu language in existence, famously recorded in Darlow and Moule's 'Historical Catalogue of the Printed Editions of Holy Scripture' as a milestone in South Asian scriptural translation. Today, Schultze's original manuscript dispatches remain housed in the Francke Foundations Archives in Halle. These three s.…
