1888 New York, 1st edn, 182pp, 7 full page wood engravings, 2 maps. Trapping for valuable furs and hunting in the Skeena River area of British Columbia. Set in one of the least hospitable regions of the world, the land repaid this rigorous and disdainful sportsman with an abundance of indignity, woe and suffering. The author's travels extended along the coast and down through central British Columbia, including visits to Metlahkatla, Fort George, Alexandria, Kamloops, Vancouver, and Victoria. The multi-colored decorated front cover is among the most dramatic and elaborate of any hunting book we know with an illustration on the front cover of a hunter, mostly obscured from view, fleeing from a formidable-looking bear on its hind legs set in a snowy wilderness. A very good plus copy of a book that is exceedingly hard to find in even good plus condition. Green or blue cloth with elaborately stamped bear and snowy forest on front cover. No stamping on spine.
