First paperback edition, first printing of Thunderball by Ian Fleming, published by PAN in London, 1963. This is a near fine copy free from internal inscriptions, some creasing to the spine and bumping to the spine tips, light bumping to the corners, the text blocks are toned throughout, though free from foxing. Cover design by Raymond Hawkey. Thunderball by Ian Fleming is the ninth novel in the James Bond series, published in 1961. The plot follows British secret agent 007 as he battles the criminal organisation SPECTRE, led by the sinister Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Bond is tasked with retrieving two stolen nuclear warheads that SPECTRE threatens to detonate unless a ransom is paid. The covers have some rubbing, creasing and wear commensurate with age and handling. No significant creases, chips or tears. The spine is slightly rolled from reading with light reading creases. Internally also very good with no inscriptions and clean pages. No creases or tears. The paper stock has tanned as usual. Covers bright. A vintage set of Pan paperback printings in the classic 'X' series with cover artwork and bold 'James Bond' lettering after designs by Raymond Hawkey. A few titles with ink names/owner's inscriptions, one with pencil name, cheap paper stock toned as usual, acceptable soiling to covers, some rubs/wear to spines, no chips or tears to covers, generally presentable. A very good set. A few titles in this series are becoming rather scarce. Introduced on Thunderball in 1963, the stylish 'X' series featured the "iconic 'JAMES BOND' lettering, being larger and bolder than either the book title or the author's name. His [Hawkey's] cover art was applauded by Fleming and remained unchanged until 1969" (Gilbert, pp.36, 311). These are the familiar designs which a vast audience remembers vividly; many readers will have encountered the literary 007 for the very first time via a paperback from this series. Various printings (no first impressions were issued in these covers). No ink names or stamps. Cheap paper toned as expected, covers with acceptable wear, some reading creases to spines, some rubbing and sunning. Very good. Thirteen of the fourteen original James Bond books were issued in this series; 'Live and Let Die' being issued exclusively in film tie-in covers throughout this period, to promote the 1973 movie.
