Illustrations by Florence Scovel Shinn. 252 pp. plus single page ad for Gilder's "Autobiography of a Tom-Boy". A tight, near fine copy , very small crescent-shaped spot front board, touch of rubbing to the spine. Jeanette Leonard Gilder (1849-1916) was a journalist, critic, and author. She was a regular correspondent and literaty critic for the Chicago Tribune as well as for papers in Boston and Philadelphia. Finding traditional work ofr women not to be to her liking, she was a researcher for a historian during the Civil War and began her newspaper work in 1869 for the Newark (NJ) Morning Register as well as being the Newark reported for the New York Tribune. In the 1870's she became literary editor for Scribner's Monthly. Her two "Tom-Boy" novels were generally autobiographical; "TomBoy at Work" follows the main character as she embarks on a career of office work and writing for periodicals. Interestingly, despite her own career and accomplishments Gilder was not in favor of women's suffrage and wrote opposing it in the early 20th century. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers E25527
