Published to coincide with the important show at The Whitechapel Art Gallery, August 9 - September 9, 1956. Twelve groups of three to four architects, artists, designers and theorists were allocated gallery space to produce work on the theme of 'modern life'. The exhibition featured work by, among others, John McHale, Alison and Peter Smithson, Richard Hamilton, William Turnbull, Sarah Jackson, Mary Martin, Eduardo Paolozzi, Reyner Banham, Victor Pasmore, Erno Goldfinger, Frank Cordell, and Toni del Renzio. Bryan Robertson was the director of the gallery at the time. The catalogue includes three introductions by Lawrence Alloway, Reyner Banham and David Lewis. Condition: neat small rubber stamp of previous owner on the back of the final page, some wear to edges of covers and surface wear to spiral binding, minor ding bottom right of front cover and top left of back cover.
