Bath, 1802. 3 volumee (of 4), comprising a series of letters from Reverend Richard Warner to William Johnston, Esq. Volume I, so labeled on title page (with frontis) contains Letter I. page [1]-96 [with route map from River Avon, Bath-S to Dudley-N]; and Letter II, page [97]-183 [with route map Dudley-S to Castleton-N]. Volume II, so labeled on title page (no frontis), begins with Letter V, pages [1]-60 [with route map Carlisle-S, N to Berwich, and S to Newcastle with several jaunts to the ocean en route]; Letter VI, pages [61]-112 [with a zigzag amble route map Ambleside-S through castle country to Naworth-Castle and Gilsland-N at 'The Picts' Wall];' and Letter VII, pages [113]-147 [with route map round the Bay of Morecambe from Manchester-S to Hawkshead, Winadermere and Ambleside-N]. The third volume has neither title page, nor frontis, which do not appear to be 'missing', begins with Letter VIII, pages [149]-182 [with route map Wellington -S to Manchester - N]; Letter IX, page [185]-259 [with route map Warwick-S to Watling Street-N]; Letter X, page [262]-300 [with route map Bath-S to Warwick-N]."Finis" emblem at end. Route maps are in text at the head of the letter. Condition is fair to poor. Half leather, spines heavily rubbed, splitting on third volume, with rubbed marbled boards. Front boards detached. Text is good. No former owner marks. Volumes are secured and consolidated in an archival acetate jacket. Warner (1763-1857) was an English clergyman, Curate of Bath, and writer of a considerable number of topographical books based on his walks and his interest in antiquarianism. The present volumes represent a first hand account of a wide range of environmental, cultural, antiquarian, and economic observations and insights.
