The fragmentations were due to issues of government and patronage. Ecclesiastical patronage, which is the right of local lairds to appoint ministers to a parish had been reintroduced in the 1711 Patronage Act of 1711. In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally, very smart. Light shelfwear to the joints and extremities. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright.
