21 x 13 cm. Octavo. vi 856pp. Bound into full brown leather, gilt spine lettering, gilt stamped with emblem for "The Society of Writers to the Signet" Complete with 10 plates and 1 table in the rear. Plates depict crystaline structures, instruments. French language text. Large fold-out table titled "Tableau Méthodique des espèces minérales, d'après les principes minéralisateurs." Spine has been professionally repaired and rebacked. Half-title page reads: "Essai d'un cours élémentaire et général des sciences physiques. Minéralogie.". This is the less common first edition, a revised edition was done in two volumes in 1830-32. An ex-private library copy, the evidence for this is a stamp and a small book label on front fixed endpaper and no other markings. From the library of Leonard G. Wilson, a professor of medicine and author of several books on geologist Charles Lyell, with Wilson's bookplate on front fixed endpaper. "Mineralogical investigations, particularly experiments with carbonates and other salts, revealed to Beudant a principle of the combination of mineral substances that he expressed in Beudant's law. Essentially, he found that some compounds dissolved in the same solution would precipitate together, forming a crystal whose properties they determined in common. The interfacial angles of this new crystal would have a value intermediate between the angles of the original compounds, proportional to the quantity of each. The same idea had been put forth by Robert Boyle in "The Origine of Form and Qualities" (1666)". Considered at time of publication to be the best authority on French mineralogy. DSB II p 106.
