Octavo. Two volumes. (complete). XIV + 360 + XIV + 275 pp., each volume with half-title and folding map (as frontispiece) Recent full brown cloth with gold title on spines. Marbled paper edges. Fascinating account of the author's journey in the Levant. There, Newton was vice-consul between 1852 and 1859 and lead the British government's expedition to Asia Minor in 1856, where the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was excavated. He became a curator at the British Museum in 1861. This work is beautifully illustrated with 41 plates, including 12 albumen photographs by F. Bedford, city plans and lithographic illustrations and maps, inlcluding the town of ports of Rhodes. Some double-page and folding, 9 folding maps/plans, 38 other illustrations. Both half title-pages slightly soiled, and partly chipped in first volume. 2" closed tear on frontispiece of first volume. Very minor foxing or soiling on few plates. Text in English.
