Travels recounted in letters with descriptions of Gibraltar, Malta, Sicily, Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon. Dr. Thomas has a fine eye for the geographical, agricultural and social features, as he observes them, in the regions travelled. He has lengthy comments about the Muslim inhabitants in Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon and some comments about Christian and Jewish settlements. This is a fascinating picture of what the tourist of 1850 encountered in these regions. Thomas travelled to Alexandria, Cairo, Memphis, etc, and then through Jaffa (Haifa), Bethelem, Ramallah, Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, Jenin, Nazareth, Sea of Galilee, and into Lebanon, eventually ending up in Beirut after a passage by Balbec. The book abruptly ends in Beirut. In orig. cloth, chipped at spine ends, rubbed at extremities; foxing on endsheets and prelims., occasional foxing in contents but many pages are clean.
