Gavin on blank flyleaf. Good. First Edition in book form. Longmore's work originally appeared as a chapter in volume II (pp. 1-95) of T. Holmes (ed.), A System of Surgery: Theoretical and Practical in Treatises by Various Authors. Although I have seen it stated that there was a British edition in book form, I have been unable to identify such an edition. That is why I am calling this Philadelphia 1862 imprint the first edition in book form. 1178 copies of Longmore's book were purchased during the Civil War for distribution to Union surgeons (History of the National Library of Medicine, p. 18). The book offered here should not be confused with Longmore's later, and much larger, work Gunshot Injuries: Their History, Characteristic Features, Complications, and General Treatment. . ., which was published in 1877.
