Some spotting and minor abrasions to boards. Scarce. Wing 2471. The Great Fire of London was a major conflagration that swept through central London from 2nd September to 6th September 1666. It gutted the medieval City of London inside the old Roman walls. It also extended past the wall to the West. A committee was established in the aftermath to investigate the cause of the Great Fire, chaired by Sir Robert Brooke. It received many submissions alleging a conspiracy of foreigners and Catholics to destroy London. The urge to identify scapegoats for the fire focused upon the confession of a French watchmaker named Robert Hubert, who claimed that he was a member of a gang that had started the Great Fire in Westminster. He later changed his story to say that he had started the fire at the bakery in Pudding Lane. Hubert was convicted, despite some misgivings about his fitness to plead, and hanged at Tyburn. The committee's report was presented to Parliament on 22 January 1667. The report that appeared in print concluded that Hubert was one of a number of Catholic plotters responsible for starting the fire. However, following his execution it became apparent that he had been on board a ship in the North Sea when the fire began, and had not arrived in London until two days after the fire started.
